When I left the Philippines, my heart was filled with hope and ambition. The promise of financial and time freedom called me to Canada, a land of opportunity. I was determined to build a better future for my family. For four years, I worked as a caregiver for eight hours a day, while also working seven hours in a factory each day. Upon receiving my Permanent Residency, I pursued studies in Personal Support Work (PSW) and took on two full-time PSW roles, working from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, with a part-time night shift in between.

I poured all my energy into securing our future. My husband, equally dedicated, worked tirelessly as a chef, while also taking on PSW shifts twice a week. Every morning, he would start his day at 5 a.m., driving for Uber before heading to work. Our lives became a blur of constant work and exhaustion, all in the hope of providing a better future for our children. However, as the days slipped away, we found ourselves distanced from our children for many years. They, too, felt the weight of this change.

One evening, after another exhausting day, my youngest child looked up at me and asked, "Mama, why did we come to Canada? Why did you bring me here?" I replied, "Because we want to be with you, and this time, we will not leave you. We left you when you were just three years old, and now you're already fourteen." Her response pierced through me: "But we barely see you. You and Papa said we'd be together more, but you're always working—day and night, even on holidays. I don’t remember the last time you spent an hour with me at the mall. You're always in a rush, always chasing time."
