When I left the Philippines, my heart was full of hope. Canada promised financial freedom and opportunity, and I was determined to give my family the life they deserved. For four years, I worked as a caregiver by day and in a factory by night. After receiving my Permanent Residency, I pursued studies in Personal Support Work and took on two full-time PSW roles — working from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a part-time night shift in between.

My husband was equally relentless. A dedicated chef by trade, he also took on PSW shifts twice a week and drove for Uber starting at 5 a.m. before heading to work each day. We gave everything we had — every hour, every ounce of energy — believing that our sacrifices would one day give our children the future they deserved. But somewhere along the way, time slipped through our fingers. One evening, after another exhausting day, my youngest daughter looked up at me and asked quietly, "Mama, why did we come to Canada? Why did you bring me here?" I told her we came to be together — that we would never leave her again. She had only been three years old when we first left. Now she was fourteen.

Her reply stopped me cold: "But we barely see you. You and Papa said we'd be together more, but you're always working — day and night, even on holidays. I don't remember the last time you spent an hour with me at the mall. You're always in a rush, always chasing time."

Her words pierced my heart. The very dream that had carried us across the world — to be present for our children, to witness their milestones, to share in their joy — was quietly unraveling. That night, my husband and I sat together, exhausted but clear-eyed. We hadn't come to Canada simply to survive. We had come to truly live.

It was time for a new path.
